Social StudiesThe Social Studies Department of Roman Catholic High School provides a program of three required courses that endeavors to educate the students in the basic skills of critical thinking, writing, and research while developing intellectual capabilities and ideas of respect for cultural diversity, morality, and good citizenship. Electives in Government and the History of Judaism are available to the 12th grade student.
HONORS WORLD HISTORY I
TRACK 1 (211) This course is designed for the outstanding and highly motivated student. The traditional World History I curriculum is enhanced with activities that emphasize critical thinking, creative group role-plays, individual and group research, and a comprehensive reading program of the foundations of human civilizations. An integrated use of technology includes subject-appropriate research on the Internet, multimedia and CD-ROM presentations.
WORLD HISTORY I
TRACK 2 (212) Designed for the outstanding student, this course is a global survey of both Western and non-Western cultures from prehistoric time to the 17th century. Course content includes the Middle East, Egypt, Greece, Rome, India, Africa, the Americas and medieval Europe through the Reformation. Material is presented in an accelerated pace, and students are intellectually challenged to think critically and discuss their views.
TRACK 3 (213) This course provides college preparatory treatment of various global cultures both Western and non-Western from prehistoric times to the 17th century. Listening, reading, and thinking skills are incorporated into the lessons. The course content inc ludes Egypt, Africa, Asia and ancient and medieval Europe as well as the Americas.
HONORS WORLD HISTORY II
TRACK 1 (221) PREREQUISITE: World History I Designed for the gifted student, this course details events from the 17th century to the present. Areas of Western and non-Western cultures are presented in great depth. Significant historical events, development of political and social institutions, and contributions of various countries and individuals are among the topics presented. All course material is presented at an accelerated pace, and students are intellectually challenged to think critically. Library and Internet research is another integral part of this course.
WORLD HISTORY II
PREREQUISITE: World History I TRACK 2 (222) Designed for the outstanding student, this course studies the development of Western and non-Western cultures from the 17th century to the present. Political and social institution as well as individual contributions to history are covered. The course includes Europe, Asia, Africa, Middle East, and Latin American studies.
TRACK 3 (223) This course offers a college preparatory treatment of various global cultures, both Western and non-Western from the 17th century to the present. Listening, reading, writing and thinking skills are incorporated into the lessons. This course includes Europe, Asia, Africa, and other areas of the world.
HONORS AMERICAN HISTORY
REQUIRED FOR ALL HONORS JUNIORS, EXECPT THOSE STUDENTS WHO MAY TAKE A.P. HISTORY IN SENIOR YEAR TRACK 1 (231) Designed for the outstanding student, this course is a survey of the political, economic, and social history of the United States from the early days of colonization through the Civil War era, ending with the events of the late 1990’s. The course encourages critical thinking, discussion, and student research. America’s role in developing global society is presented through the use of newspapers, magazines, films and text in an effort to promote a common appreciation of diverse opinions and a deep respect for cultural diversity.

This course is a college preparatory social history survey of the United States from colonial days to the present. An integrated use of technology is used incorporating Internet and CD-ROM research.

A survey study of American History for the college bound student, from colonial times to the present. This course highlights various political and social events of our nation. Geography, reading, and critical thinking skills are incorporated into the lessons in an effort to promote a common appreciation of diverse opinions. Various instructional methods are used in this course, including creative group role-play.
A.P. AMERICAN HISTORY (235), (245)
TRACK 5 PREREQUISITE: Approval of department chair for 11th and 12th grade students. Designed for the outstanding, highly motivated, outstanding student, this course is a survey of political, economic, and social history of the United States from an European colony into a present day superpower. The material is presented at an accelerated pace, emphasizing critical thinking and writing skills necessary for completion of the national Advanced Placement test. Emphasis will be placed on independent reading and research skills necessary for college social studies course work. All students are required to take and to pay for the U. S. History Advanced Placement Exam. Any student who does not take U.S. History in 11th grade MUST take AP History or Honors American History in their senior year.
AMERICAN GOVERNMENT (242)
TRACK 2 (Senior Elective) PREREQUISITE: Approval of Department Chair This course is designed for seniors who are considering majors in history, law or political science. This course should enhance the student’s understanding of our American Government, how it developed over time and how it functions in society today. Emphasis will be place upon the political theory of the American Founding Fathers and its application today. The three branches of Federal Government, Civil Rights and lobbyists will also be included. The electoral process and other major world government theories will also be covered. Every attempt will be made to integrate guest speakers, field trips, independent projects, and Internet research into the curriculum.
HISTORY OF THE JUDEO-CHRISTIAN TRADITION
GRADE 12 TRACK (246) PREREQUISITE: Approval of department chair One Semester Course This course is a survey of the history of Judaism and it’s partnership with Christianity through the centuries. The course covers ancient times to the present including Bible study, crusades, reformation, and the Holocaust. Independent research and outside readings are a main part of this course. Various field trips are incorporated into the curriculum.
AP PSYCHOLOGY
GRADE 12 TRACK 5 PREREQUISIT: 85 GENERAL AVERAGE; APPROVAL OF APAA;
This course is designed to introduce students to the systematic and scientific behavior and mental processes of human beings and other animals. Students are exposed to the psychological facts, principles, and phenomena associated with each of the major sub-fields within psychology. Emphasis will be placed on independent reading and research skills necessary for college level social science work. All students are required to take and to pay for the U. S. History Advanced Placement Exam.
INTRO TO PSYCHOLOGY
Grade 12 Track 2
This course is designed to introduce the study of psychology. Students are exposed to the psychological facts, principles, and phenomena associated with each of the major sub-fields within psychology. Methods which psychologists employ in their science and practice are also explored.
